Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Freestyle?

A: Freestyle is ice time that is dedicated specifically towards figure skaters to practice routines, jumps and spins.

Q: How long is a Freestyle session and how much does it cost?

A: A Freestyle session at Union Sports Arena is typically 90 minutes and costs $15 dollars.

Q: What is Synchronized skating?

A: This is a team sport, made up of 8 - 20 skaters on a team, who skate at various levels in formations of circles, wheels, lines, blocks and intersections to choreographed programs.

Q. What is Boot Camp?

A: Boot Camp is a series of Clinics held once a week, for four weeks in the Fall, with the purpose of introducing young skaters to synchronized skating.

Q: How long is a season for a synchronized team?

A: Our team runs from October through April.

Q: What is the cost to be on a synchronized team?

A: The cost can vary depending on many variables.  The number of skaters on the team affects how the total costs are divided - more skaters on a team will reduce costs.  Also, the level of the team affects the cost.  A higher level team requires more ice time, as well as off ice time, to perfect their program(s).  Other additional variables, such as ice costs (which are set by the arena), professional coaching fees, choreography fees (if any) and apparel for the entire season all add into the costs.  Teams can range between $100 - $400 / month. At Union Sports Arena you will pay approximately $175 per month.

Q: Why do synchronized teams have contracts to sign?

A: Because a team needs a minimum number of skaters in order to be eligible to compete, it is important to ensure that the team will have the skaters that signed up for the entire season. Contracts are a "safety net" for the entire team.  Contracts ensure that all team members commit to the team and live up to the standards set forth by the team.

Q: What is the benefit to skating with a team?

A: Synchronized skating gives skaters the opportunity to participate in a team sport atmosphere that, as a singles skater, they would otherwise not experience.
